We will present inelastic neutron scattering data on layered copper
oxides, which speak directly to the existence and nature of
charge-ordered phases in these materials and their competition with
superconductivity. Recent Raman scattering experiments in high
magnetic fields yielding complementary information will also be
discussed. In addition, we will present inelastic neutron scattering
data on antiferromagnetic Na0.82CoO2, the
unhydrated precursor compound of the newly discovered superconductor
NaxCoO2 0yH2O.
